CHENNAI: A monument for former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew will be built at Mannargudi, chief minister M K Stalin announced on Wednesday.
Stalin, who is in the city state as part of a nine-day business tour that includes Japan, participated in a cultural programme organised by Singapore Tamils and inaugurated 'in search of roots', under which 200 Tamil youths from Singapore will visit
Tamil Nadu every year to learn about the architecture of ancient Tamils, their water management techniques, attire and ornaments, art and literature, archaeological excavations, etc.
At the event, Stalin said, "We have decided to set up a monument for Lee Kuan Yew [the 'founding father of modern Singapore] in Mannargudi. Majority of Tamils living in Singapore are from Mannargudi and Pattukottai. I know well that every house in villages (in Mannargudi and Pattukottai) such as Paravakottai, Koopachikottai, Thirumakottai, Ullikottai and Melavasal have connections with Singapore and so a statute and a library in the name of Lee Kuan Yew will be established as part of the monument." The chief minister earlier met businessmen from Temasek, Sembcorp and CapitaLand. Interacting with Dilhan Pillai Chandrasekhara, CEO of Temasek which has already invested in wind power generation in TN, Stalin asked him to "strengthen the existing wind farms and establish offshore wind farms in Tamil Nadu."
Urging Kim Yin Wong, CEO of Sembcorp, to implement pumped hydro storage projects, he asked Sembcorp to work with the TN energy department in its various possible sectors.
Stalin told
Sanjeev Dasgupta, CEO of CapitaLand, of his interest in creating various types of research and development structures such as 'Singapore Science Park' designed by CapitaLand, and urged the company to provide technological support and investment contributions to TN.
Stalin invited Singapore minister for transport and minister-in-charge of trade relations S Iswaran the global investors' meet in Chennai in January 2024.
