Sri Lankan navy detains 15 Indian fishermen
TRICHY: The Sri Lankan navy detained 15 Indian fishermen on Thursday night on charges of poaching in the territorial waters of the island nation.
According to Coastal Security Group (CSG), the fishermen hailed from Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in the Union territory of Puducherry. They have been identified as C Sekar, 47, from Nagapattinam district, A Chandru, 34, from Pudupettai in Mayiladuthurai and P Mohan, 45, from Thazhampettai in Mayiladuthurai district, K Muruganandham, 48, T Manikandan, 37, S Velmurugan, 39, of Kilinjalmedu in Karaikal, S Idumban, 37, B Babu, 24, Thala Street in Karaikal, R Parasuraman, 41, M Murugan, 34, M Sundharavel, 52, V Vadivel, 34, K Kandhakumar, 34, K Balamurugan, 44, and M Velumani, 28, of Karaikal Medu in Karaikal.
The fishermen set sail on a boat from Karaikal at 11 pm on Wednesday. While they were engaged in fishing on Thursday night, the Sri Lankan navy arrived there, detained them and seized their boat.
They were taken to the Kankesanthurai Harbour where they would be handed over to the Mailadi fisheries inspector for onward legal proceedings, according to a statement on the Sri Lankan navy website.
