Southern Railway opens shed to overhaul LHB coaches

CHENNAI: Southern Railway has installed an exclusive shed to overhaul LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches at Carriage and

in Chennai on Thursday.

The shed, commissioned at a cost of Rs 30 crore, has a capacity to carry out periodic overhaul of 16

LHB coaches

at a time. The average turnout time would be 14 to 16 days for non-AC coaches and 20 to 22 days for

AC

coaches, said an official.

It has three bays for handling the coaches, electric overhead traveling cranes, four tracks for movement of coaches, pits for under gear inspection and an approach road.

An airless centrifugal shot blasting machine was set up at Rs 1.15 crore to cleanse bogie frame and its components so as to remove rust, mill scale and foreign matter during overhauling.

The facilities were commissioned during an inspection by Southern Railway general manager John Thomas.
