CHENNAI: Six Rajya Sabha nominees from Tamil Nadu - four from AIADMK and two from DMK, are all set to be elected unopposed. Nominations of seven independents were rejected on Wednesday.

The nomination papers of R Vaithilingam, A Navaneethakrishnan, A Vijayakumar, and S R Balasubramanian (from AIADMK), and those of T K S Elangovan and R S Bharathi (DMK) were valid and accepted, TN assembly secretary and returning officer for the biennal elections, A M P Jamaludeen said in a statement on Wednesday.

With the election of four MPs, the strength of AIADMK will go up to 12 from the present 11 in Rajya Sabha, while DMK will continue to have four MPs.

After scrutiny of nominations on Wednesday morning, papers filed by P Isakkimuthu, K Kumar, Shantha Kumari, Mangoon Natarajan, K Padmarajan, K Madhivannan and Agni Ramachandran were invalid and hence rejected as their candidatures were not proposed by the required number of MLAs.

All the six candidates in the fray will be declared elected on June 3, after the deadline for the withdrawal of nominations is over.
