COIMBATORE: Six men were arrested on Sunday for pelting stones at a mosque near Mettupalayam in
Tamil Nadu on Saturday night.
Around 11.30pm on Saturday, six men under the influence of alcohol attacked the Sunnath Jammath at in Sirumugai, police said. According to the police complaint, the accused picked up an argument with the imam of the mosque and then attacked the place of worship with stones, damaging its windowpanes.
Based on a complaint filed by a Sunnath Jamath representative, the Sirumugai police registered a case and arrested Dhandapani A (28) of Palladam, Muthu alias Udayakumar A (23), Sathishkumar R (27), Suresh alias Marimuthu K (29), Vinod alias Vinothkumar G (27) and Ranjith Kumar R (22), all from Sirumugai.
They have been booked under sections 147(rioting) 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapon), 294 (b) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place) of the Indian Penal Code and under Section 3(i) of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody.
On Sunday morning, Manikandan’s parents visited the mosque and spoke to the Imam Abbas Ali (32). The parents tried compromising with the imam, but the efforts went into vain.
