CHENNAI: A 12-year-old boy who was travelling on the

footboard

of a

bus

to school was crushed under its

wheels

after he slipped and

fell

on Friday.

The vehicle was negotiating a sharp turn at

Sunguvachatram

in Kancheepuram district. Police said V Hariharan, a lass 6 student, had boarded the bus with other students. Hariharan was hanging on to the railings but slipped and fell. Two other students sustained minor injuries.

Police moved the body to the Kancheepuram government hospital for postmortem. Residents staged a protest after the accident. They said the authorities were turning a deaf ear to the repeated pleas to increase the frequency of buses. Residents said children from nearby villages had to travel all the way to either Kancheepuram or Tiruvallur to pursue their education. More buses would prevent overcrowding and accidents, they said.
