A Samsung India spokesperson confirmed the development to TOI and stated that the employees had violated company policy. They would be subjected to disciplinary action following a formal inquiry, the spokesperson said.

“Our global code of conduct stipulates that the company has a zero-tolerance policy for any type of behaviour that goes against maintaining a professional and respectful workplace environment,” it said.

The state govt recently registered the Samsung India Thozhilalar Sangam -- a workers’ trade union at Chennai plant -- after a directive from the Madras high court.

A union member requesting anonymity told TOI that suspended employees were office-bearers of the trade union and it is a retribution for forming the union. The above quoted person further said the company was making efforts to weaken the unionisation efforts by forming an alternative workers committee.

The Samsung spokesperson said, “The company is continuing to make efforts towards a collective agreement with our workers and has not forced any employee to join the worker committee or leave the union.”

TOI has learnt that a section of workers made a sit-in protest in the facility against the management’s decision. Talks were held between the two parties at the labour commissioner’s office late evening on Wednesday.

Members of the Samsung India Thozhilalar Sangam could not immediately be reached for comments. Protests by several Samsung employees that spread over a month last year severely impacted the company's production.
