RTI petitioner yet to get Rs 10K compensation from Chennai police

CHENNAI: The Chennai city police, who have been directed by chief commissioner of the state info panel to pay Rs 10,000 for delayed information to a petitioner under the Right to Information Act, are yet to pay it even eight months after the order.

RTI activist Kasimayan filed a petition to know the status of the compensation. The reply said: “The application to seek clarification from the state govt about awarding the compensation is pending in files.”

Kasimayan said, "When the state chief information commissioner says the compensation is to be awarded within 15 days from the receipt of the order, what more clarification do the police need?”

In a petition filed in 2019, he sought an action-taken report on his complaint in 2016. He wanted to verify the documents regarding the disciplinary action initiated against the officers at Ashok Nagar police station as recommended by then deputy secretary M Araselvi. He wanted copies of the documents. After he filed the first appeal, he received a letter from an assistant commissioner inviting him to verify the documents. Kasimayan, however, filed a complaint petition before the state information commission stating that rules of the act had not been followed.

After five years, the petition was heard in June this year, and Kasimayan was awarded the compensation which the police are yet to pay.
