CHENNAI: Police have solved a case in which the complainant said he had been robbed of 6.5kg gold, by arresting the complainant himself, a private finance firm manager. Police said he had buried the ornaments near Poonamallee.
Police arrested Sankar, a manager of Mumbai-based finance company India Infoline Finance Limited, after reviewing CCTV camera footage.
He had complained to police that some masked men had robbed him of the gold at knife point. He claimed that the burglars confined him in a bathroom before escaping with jewellery worth 1.15 crore.
Acting on Sankar’s complaint, city police commissioner S George formed a special team headed by Ambattur deputy commissioner Magesh Kumar. Investigations revealed that Sankar had cooked up the robbery story after hiding the ornaments.
Police said Sankar had covered the CCTV cameras installed in the office, disconnected other security gadget including the burglar alarm, took the jewellery from lockers and concealed them in a burial ground. Apparently one of the surviving CCTV footage gave him away.
Sankar has been remanded in judicial custody.
