CHENNAI: The revenue department on Monday sealed the Madras Race Club (MRC) in Guindy as they failed to pay rental arrears running to several hundred crores of rupees to the govt.
According to revenue officials, the Tamil Nadu govt had leased out more than 160 acres of land to the club in 1945. Around 8.30 a.m. on Monday, the revenue officials, along with city police personnel, started sealing all the six gates of the race club, based on the orders of the Chennai Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade.
"We are taking the action based on a govt order. The lease to Madras Race Club stands cancelled due to the non-payment of arrears running to crores of rupees," said a revenue official.
