Chennai: Distinguishing the phrase 'social justice' from caste-based reservation, senior judge of Madras high court Justice S Tamilvanan, who retired on Friday, called for social justice in the appointment of high court judges.
"I make an earnest appeal to the chief justice and the collegium judges to consider social justice. It cannot be disputed that there should be no caste-based elevation (to the bench).
However, to maintain social justice, it is essentially needed to provide adequate representation for the downtrodden, other backward classes and women in the case of elevation of judges," said Justice Tamilvanan.
