Retired BSNL officer strangled by daughter's boyfriend in Chennai

CHENNAI: A 64-year-old retired BSNL officer was strangled by her daughter's boyfriend at her apartment in Mogappair East on Monday night.

The incident occurred after Mythili reprimanded her daughter, Rithika, for returning home late from work. Rithika, who is employed at a private firm in Porur, had been in a relationship with Shyam Kannan, 24, for three years, despite her mother's disapproval.

Rithika's husband, Jayakumar, had been living separately in Vandavasi for the past five years due to marital discord. On Monday night, Rithika left home after her mother scolded her and called Shyam Kannan to come over.

When Shyam tried to calm Rithika down, Mythili confronted them, objecting to their relationship. In a fit of rage, Shyam Kannan strangled Mythili to death.

Shyam Kannan subsequently surrendered to the JJ Nagar police, who arrested him. Rithika is also being questioned by the police as part of the ongoing investigation.
