Residents foil robbery, nab 1 miscreant, others on run

Kadapakkam

on Monday prevented a robbery, nabbing one of the miscreants. The others managed to escape, abandoning their car in the process.

Locals noticed a Maruti Suzuki parked in front of the house belonging to a 51-year-old shopkeeper, Karunanandham, in

Ponneri

. One occupant got out of the car with a crowbar and tried to break open the lock on the front door. Karunanandham’s neighbours were aware that the

shopkeeper

and his family had gone to

Tuticorin

for a few days. They suspected a burglary was under way and informed other residents.

On spotting several locals gathering at the spot, the other occupants of the car fled. The man trying to break open the lock was cornered and handed over to police. The Ponneri police also seized the car. Police identified the accused as Boobalan, 35, of Choolaimedu. He was remanded in judicial custody.

Police are now searching for his three accomplices.
