Recruitment of teachers to govt schools: Ramadoss urges TN govt to raise upper age limit

COIMBATORE: The

PMK

has urged the Tamil Nadu government to raise the upper age limit for teachers to apply for direct recruitment in government schools. The previous AIADMK government last year fixed the upper age limit at 40 years for the general category and 45 years for the reserved category. The present DMK government raised it by two years. Before the AIADMK government fixed the age limit, it was 57 years.

Ramadoss

said chief minister M K Stalin, who was then the opposition leader, opposed the move to fix the upper age limit last year. He had made a poll promise to revoke it. Ramadoss asked the CM to fulfil his poll promise.

The present DMK government increased the upper age limit by two years and the announcement was made last month. But the PMK leader said that was not sufficient as not all the aspirants got an opportunity when recruitment drives were carried only 3-4 times in the last 14 years.

Ramadoss said there were lakhs of qualified teachers eligible for appointment as post graduate teachers in schools, but the pandemic had made them ineligible because of their age. The decision of the DMK government to declare candidates over the age of 42 ineligible to apply for direct recruitment for 2,207 posts of postgraduate teachers in government higher secondary schools had shattered the dream of thousands of teacher aspirants, he said.
