Ramalingam murder case: NIA arrests two proclaimed offenders
Chennai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday arrested two of the five absconding accused in the 2019 Ramalingam murder case.
Abdul Majeeth and Shahul Hameed, both from Thanjavur district, were among six people declared proclaimed offenders by a special court. They carried a cash reward of ₹5 lakh each.
The NIA secured the duo from their hideout. However, the agency did not disclose the location.
The case relates to the murder of Ramalingam, who was hacked to death at Paku Vinayakam Thoppu in Thanjavur district on Feb 5, 2019 by members and office-bearers of the Popular Front of India (PFI). Majeeth and Hameed, who were members of the PFI, conspired with other accused to attack Ramalingam. The attack, which involved chopping off his hands, was intended to instil fear and spread communal hatred.
The NIA took over the investigation from the Tamil Nadu police in March 2019 and filed a chargesheet against 18 accused before the NIA special court in Chennai. In 2021, the agency arrested one of the absconders, identified as Rahman Sadiq. In November 2024, the NIA traced Majeeth and Hameed to the Poombarai area of Kodaikanal in Dindigul district and arrested Mohammed Ali Jinah, who had harboured them. Jinah is now the 19th accused in the case.
Majeeth and Hameed were finally nabbed on Saturday. Efforts are on to arrest the three remaining offenders.
The Centre banned the PFI in 2022.
