PWD officials to inspect manufacturing units to ensure quality of m-sand

CHENNAI: In a bid to ensure that quality manufactured

sand

m-sand

) is used in public projects, public works department (

PWD

) officials will inspect manufacturing units of the key construction material, which is being suggested as an alternate to

river sand

.

In a recent circular, PWD said it was necessary to identify and use good quality m-sand in all building works executed by the PWD.

To ensure the quality of m-sand, firms manufacturing it may place their product in the PWD assessment committee for approval of the product, it added.

The assessment committee comprise senior PWD officials and experts from the IIT and Anna University besides various agencies of the state government.

"Executive engineer, PWD, should inspect the manufacturing unit and site to verify the details furnished in the application for approval. Also, after the approval the nominated PWD engineer shall inspect then and there to see that m-sand is manufactured as per approved specification and whenever any deviations in manufacturing process/quality of the products is noticed the approval shall be cancelled by the chairman of the assessment committee PWD at any time," the circular added.
