CHENNAI: A pregnant dwarf sperm whale that washed ashore at Perunduravu in Chengalpet was pronounced dead when volunteers of an NGO found it on Thursday morning.
The whale was spotted by two volunteers of Tree Foundation, Pandian and
Sudhakar. Later, they informed district forest officer of Chengalpet, Ravi Meena, who ensured a post mortem was conducted.
The dwarf whale had injuries inside its mouth and belly.
Supraja Dharini, marine conservationist, chairperson and founder of Tree Foundation, said, "This is really upsetting as it was pregnant. This is a rare species."
