CUDDALORE:A serving police constable was arrested for teaming up with a notorious history-sheeter to execute a highway mugging under the guise of an official police interrogation near Vridhachalam in Cuddalore district. His aide was also arrested.
The arrested were identified as S Ranjith, 32, a police constable attached to the Vriddhachalam police station in Cuddalore district and his aide M Subash Chandra Bose, 24, a history-sheeter with a criminal record from Poothottam near Vriddhachalam.
A release from Cuddalore superintendent of police S Jeyakumar’s office said Ranjith had been officially deployed for bandobast duty at Kottakuppam in Viluppuram district from June 6. However, he skipped duty. On Sunday night, a heavily intoxicated Ranjith teamed up with Bose and waylaid a group of youths. The duo attacked them and snatched away the mobile phone and cash from one of them.
One of the youths, V Dhinesh Kumar, 19, who sustained injuries on his head and underwent treatment at Rajah Muthaiah Medical College Hospital, Chidambaram, lodged a complaint with Vridhachalam police. Jeyakumar ordered swift disciplinary and criminal action against the constable and his aide. The Vridhachalam police booked the constable and the criminal under six different sections of the BNS and arrested them. The SP placed the constable under suspension.
