Pet poop: RWAshows the way

Chennai: Valmiki Nagar residential welfare association in Thiruvanmiyur has place red-coloured bins along the roads for pet owners to dispose of pet waste separately. “People no longer step on pet faeces while walking along the sides of the road. We do not have to pick it up manually off the roads,” said a contract worker with the GCC.“We told the pet owners to dispose pet waste into the red bins, highlighting that it is hard to pick it up manually. Most residents have listened to us. Now, I hardly see pet faeces on the roads,” the worker added.An awareness drive was conducted on social media and through personal contact. The drive garnered a decent response, said Jayanthi Premchander from the Valmiki Nagar RWA. Residents designed reflective posters for 600 each to be pasted in each apartment, instructing people to dispose pet waste in the red bins. Around 53 people funded this initiative. “We also went for a walk and decided where the pet waste bins must be placed, after speaking with Urbaser Sumeet staff. We placed five bins costing 1200 each, across the 4th Seaward Road in Valmiki Nagar,” said Jayanthi.The bins are lined with plastic covers. “We wrap the pet faeces in paper or plastic and put them inside the bins, which the conservancy workers collect along with sanitary waste,” said Srini Raman, owner of Coco, a beagle.
