Parandur airport protest: TVK chief Vijay says he is with people

CHENNAI: Actor and TVK founder Vijay announced on Monday that he will stand by the people of Parandur and 12 other villages nearby opposing the proposed Parandur airport project. The actor expressed his solidarity with the farmers who have been protesting against the project for over 910 days.


Vijay visited Parandur to meet the protesting farmers at a private resort, arriving in his caravan. Standing atop the caravan, he reaffirmed his support, stating that farmers are the backbone of the nation, and emphasized that his political journey began in Parandur, where locals are fighting to protect their farmland.

The actor recalled the resolution passed at his first political meeting in Vikravandi, where TVK pledged to oppose the Parandur airport project. He urged both state and Union governments to abandon the plan, claiming that while he supports development and airports, the proposed project should not be located in Parandur.

Vijay also recommended that the government reconsider the project and find an alternate location where fewer farmlands are affected and people’s lives are not disrupted. He criticized the DMK for their contradictory stance, pointing out that while they opposed tungsten mining in Arittapatti village near Madurai, they are supporting the Parandur airport project, which has similar environmental impacts.

Addressing the DMK’s shift in stance, Vijay said, "When the DMK was in the opposition, they were allies of the farmers, but now, after assuming office, they have turned against them." The TVK president further revealed that he was denied permission to meet protesters in Ekanapuram but promised to meet them soon at their protest site.

Farmers at the meeting expressed confidence in Vijay’s support, trusting that he would stand with them and ensure the project does not go ahead in Parandur.
