CHENNAI: After decades of functioning from a dilapidated structure,

Pallikaranai police station

is set to get a new building. It is being constructed at

Medavakkam Road Junction

near

Velachery

bypass. The 2,400sqft building is being constructed at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.

Pallikaranai got a police station in 1987 in a building covered with asbestos sheet. Later, a building was constructed, but it was never fully equipped.

Pallikaranai

police inspector P K Sivakumar said “Construction is at full swing and it could be completed in about four months.” The delay in its construction was due to delay in allocation of funds, sources said.

M Hemachandran, a resident of

Medavakkam Main Road

, said “The present police station is in a bad shape. It is unsafe and during the floods it was inundated. Many important documents were washed away in the floods. After the floods there was demand from the police and residents for a new police station. The funds were sanctioned after that.”

The new police station will have room for both the crime and law and order police personnel as they are both crammed in the old station. The new station will also have a large parking lot for keeping seized vehicles.

“We look forward to moving to the new police station which has ventilation and will be a better work environment than this cringy place,” said a woman police officer.
