MTC launches low-floor electric AC bus service in Chennai

Chennai: To encourage a shift from private vehicles to public transport, Metropolitan Transport Corporation launched a low-floor electric AC bus service in the city on Wednesday. It was inaugurated by transport minister S S Sivasankar.In its first phase, five buses will operate on two routes. Route P91 between Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (Kilambakkam) and Thiruvanmiyur will be covered by two buses, while three will run on the P570S route connecting CMBT, Koyambedu, and Siruseri IT Park. Bus fare ranges from 50 to 150. Officials said the buses are designed to attract commuters who prefer faster and comfortable travel. Amenities include pre-booking of seating, free Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, CCTV surveillance, panic buttons, a passenger information system and USB charging ports. Buses operate without conductors and commuters can reserve seats up to five days in advance through the Chennai One mobile app as standing passengers will not be allowed. Officials say the service could be expanded to other major routes too.
