CHENNAI: An MTC bus driver died and his colleague, a conductor, suffered serious injuries after an unidentified vehicle hit them on the Mount-Poonamallee Road in Ayyapanthangal on Saturday night.
Police said the driver Parameswaran, 46, of Ramapuram and the conductor Ganesan, 40, of Tirunelveli, were going home after parking the bus at the Ayyapanthangal depot when the accident took place.
The vehicle fled the scene.
Several MTC staff in the vicinity rushed the duo to a nearby private hospital where Parameswaran succumbed to injuries. Ganesan is in the intensive care unit of the hospital and his condition is said to be critical.
An eyewitness told police that they came to the rescue of the two men after hearing loud cries. However, they could not note the vehicle’s registration number as it sped away in the dark within seconds.
An investigating officer of the Poonamallee traffic wing said the spot where the duo got hit was not properly lighted. Also, there were no CCTV cameras in the area. Police, however, are on the lookout for the vehicle. “We will check the available footage from the adjoining areas and trace the vehicle,” said the officer.
Police have registered a case under 304 A – causing death due to negligence -- and are investigating further.
