TRICHY: Tamil Nadu transport minister S S Sivasankar on Friday launched construction work on a memorial for Tamil language martyr Kizhapaluvur Chinnasamy in Ariyalur district.
The memorial to be developed at Rs 3 crore sanctioned by the state government would have a hall to commemorate the role of Chinnasamy in promoting the importance of the Tamil language.
As part of a series of anti-Hindi agitation that happened in the state in the 1960s, Chinnasamy, a native of Kizhapaluvur village in Ariyalur district, immolated himself in Trichy on January 25, 1964, to protest the Hindi language imposition.
Recently, the Tamil Nadu government recognising his sacrifice had announced that a memorial hall would be constructed at Kizhapaluvur.
“Chinnasamy’s role in anti-Hindi agitation will now reach many people including tourists through the upcoming memorial in the Ariyalur district. A statue and history of the language martyr will be erected in the memorial,” the minister said.
Earlier, Ariyalur district collector Anne Mary Swarna explained to the minister the plan for the language martyr memorial and amenities for the visitors.
