CHENNAI: Chennai recorded the second

hottest day

in the last 10 years during the month of

April

, after the

maximum temperature

rose by five degrees at

Nungambakkam

, from 34.6 C on Saturday to 39.7 C on Sunday. The rise in temperature could persist until Tuesday, said

weathermen

.

The day grew hotter due to dry westerly winds that blew into the city as a result of a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic circulation, which is moving away from the TN coast and towards the Myanmar coast at about 30 kmph, caused a change in the wind direction. The prevailing easterly and southeasterly winds in the city were replaced by dry westerly winds that lasted until afternoon.

The sudden influx of dry westerly winds sent the temperature shooting up on Sunday, resulting in the hottest day of the year so far.
