SHILLONG: The Meghalaya govt is set to collaborate with the Tamil Nadu govt to boost tourism and strengthen inter-state relations.
Highlighting the synergy between the two states, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasised Tamil Nadu's influence on Meghalaya's healthcare system, noting, “In the health sector, Tamil Nadu is doing excellent work, and we learned a lot from them.”
One area of collaboration is in improving healthcare efficiency. Meghalaya adopted strategies from the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) to streamline medical supply chains, minimising wastage and expired medications. Additionally, an MoU facilitated the training of 100 Meghalaya doctors in Tamil Nadu, bolstering the state’s healthcare workforce. “This reflects the deepening ties between the two states in tackling shared challenges and leveraging mutual strengths,” CM Sangma said. He was speaking to Times of India on the sidelines of the Cherry Blossom festival.
In tourism, Meghalaya is focusing on attracting visitors from Tamil Nadu, particularly to Shillong and other scenic destinations. Promotional activities in Tamil Nadu will highlight Meghalaya’s offerings. Sangma noted the strong connection between the states, with many young people from Meghalaya visiting Chennai for education and healthcare. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade Shillong Airport in Umroi, enabling direct connectivity with metros like Chennai and reducing reliance on Guwahati.
“We are expanding Shillong Airport to accommodate larger aircraft, which will make travel easier for tourists from Tamil Nadu. Infrastructure development is also underway, including 2,600 homestays, star hotels, and better transportation facilities,” said Sangma. The state is also promoting MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions), music, eco-tourism, and adventure tourism to strengthen its appeal.
Sangma underscored the importance of fostering 'sister-state' relationships, advocating for greater collaboration between states alongside ties with the central govt.
Tamil Nadu tourism minister R Rajendran welcomed the potential partnership, stating, “We would like to work with Meghalaya; it will improve tourism for both states.”
