CHENNAI: Police have apprehended an

MDMK district secretary

for attacking a corporation executive engineer who tried to remove illegal banners put up for a party function outside the

YMCA

ground in

Nandanam

on Sunday.


K Varadarajan was roughed up by the party workers who protested against removing the banners.

An injured Varadarajan was admitted to a private hospital. After he filed a complaint, the

police registered a case under IPC Sections 294 (B) (abusing), 323 (assaulting using hands), 353 (preventing a government servant from discharging duty), 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC and Section 3 of the Public Property Damage and Loss Act.

Police booked the case against south Chennai west district secretary of the MDMK P Subramani and arrested him late Monday night. He was remanded in Puzhal prison after being produced before a magistrate court in the city.

A police officer said they have collected video clips from a few people who recorded the incident. They are trying to apprehend a few more MDMK workers involved in the attack.

On Monday, Varadarajan went to inspect YMCA ground after he received complaints that illegal banners were put up there for an MDMK meeting. When he asked the workers to remove the banners, several MDMK workers arrived there in four cars. Nearly 40 people surrounded the engineer and tried to drag him out of his car. Varadarajan’s driver left the car leaving him alone.
