TIRUVANNAMALAI: A 22-year-old man plunged to his
death while he was trying to take a selfie atop a 75-foot-high waterfall at Jamanamaruthur village in
Tiruvannamalai district of
Tamil Nadu on Monday. One of his friends who tried to save him also fell and sustained fractures.
A joint team of police and fire and rescue services personnel recovered the body of S Murali, a mechanic and a resident of Kalandhira in Vaniyambadi and rescued his friend G Manikandan, 19, of Chinnamottur, Vaniyambadi after a four-hour operation.
Based on a complaint filed by Murali’s father on Tuesday, the Jamunamaruthur police had registered a case and are investigating.
Police said ahead of Diwali, Murali, Manikandan and Manikandan’s relative R Vijayakumar went to Beeman fall in Jamunamaruthur. The incident took place around 9.45am on Monday when Murali and Manikandan were trying to take a selfie from atop the waterfall. Murali stepped on the crest, slipped and fell. Manikandan who tried to save him also fell.
Murali sustained severe head injuries and fractures and died on his way to Government Vellore Medical College and Hospital from Jamunamaruthur primary healthcare centre.
Manikandan has been admitted to a hospital in Vellore.
A case under Section 174 of CrPC has been registered and further investigations are on.
