CHENNAI: A 37-year-old man jumped to his death from the building housing the office of the additional commissioner of police (traffic) in Kilpauk on Thursday. He was identified as S Antony Samy (37), a resident of Kovilpatti near Tirunelveli, who had returned home from Malaysia on December 16.
Around 12.45 pm on Thursday , a constable on sentry duty heard a cry and the next minute saw the man lying in a pool of blood with his head smashed before at the entrance of the office.
“Earlier, the man had entered saying he had come to meet a deputy police commissioner,” a constable told TOI.
The gate to the terrace of the two-storey building was kept open throughout the day as the Metro Rail work between Egmore and Shenoy Nagar is underway , police sources said. Several metro rail employees constantly went up to the terrace for some related works.
“Antony Samy went up the stairs to the first floor and then without hesitation climbed to the second flood where a group of traffic police personnel were busy at work. The man then continued on to the terrace, making his way through files and folders dumped on the staircase. He then jumped from the terrace,” a police officer said.
“We are questioning some of his relatives in Kilpauk to finds out the reason for his suicide,” said east Chennai joint commissioner of police S N Seshasai.
Initial inquiries revealed that Samy had gone to a private hospital on Azhagappa Road in Purasawalkam in the morning for treatment for a head injury allegedly caused in a clash.
“Doctors there found his blood pressure and pulse rate abnormally high and referred him to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for an x-ray,” said deputy commissioner of police (Kilpauk) K Bhavaneeshwari. Inquiries with the Purasawalkam hospital confirmed that Samy had gone there complaining of pain in a hand and for treating a head injury. He told the staff there of not being able to lift his hands.
“The man worked as an electrician in Malaysia and Singapore for seven years and had been sending money regularly to his family for six years. He had stopped sending money a year back,” police said. Antony Samy, a bachelor, was the second son of Siluvaikan.
