CHENNAI: K Manoharan of Ashok Nagar is unlikely to forget May 20 when VCK chief Thirumavalavan’s personal secretary S Vetriselvan was murdered. It was the day the 49-year-old photographer’s scooter was hit by a car in which Vetriselvan’s killers were trying to flee wheeler on Medavakkam Main Road. He suffered serious injuries and is battling for life in a private hospital.
Around 7.20am on that day, Manoharan and his assistant Satish were going to attend a function on a scooter when a car suddenly came into their path. Manoharan, who was riding, could do nothing but watch as the car dashed against their vehicle and he was thrown to the ground along with Sathish. The car, carrying the gang which had earlier hacked Vetriselvan at his real estate office on Raghava Nagar Third Main Road, sped away.
“The car came at lightning speed from the wrong direction. All we heard was the gang members shouting and hurling abuses at the public,” said Sathish, who sustained injuries on his right leg. Some residents of the area, who were at the spot, were reluctant to give chase to the car as the gang members inside wielded sickles. Soon after hitting the scooter, the car’s front tyre flattened and the gang abandoned it in Alandur.
Manoharan, who suffered injuries on the hip, thigh and knee, was rushed to a private hospital. “Since he is the sole bread winner of the family, we are struggling to even bear the hospital expenses. He underwent a tleast four surgeries in one week. But he is being given special care,” said his wife Anuradha.
It is yet another instance of innocent members of the public caught in the fight between rival rowdy gangs. A case has been registered.
