Man dupes transwoman of Rs 1.5 lakh, held

CHENNAI: Police have arrested a man who targeted a transwoman and cheated her of ?1.5 lakh.

Police identified the accused as Mohammed Hussain of Puzhal.

Transwoman Farzana

, from PP Thottam, had lodged a complaint against him with the

Aminjikarai

police in March, saying he posed as a rich businessman, borrowed ?1.5 lakh and vanished into thin air. While there was no progress on the complaint, Farzana received information on Saturday that Mohammed Hussain had cheated another transperson, Fathima, in Thoothukudi and Fathima had set herself on fire subsequently. Farzana and her friends protested outside the Aminjikarai police station seeking arrest of the man on Saturday.

A special team arrested Mohammed Hussain at Petmanagaram village in Srivaikundam taluk on Sunday in connection to Farzana’s case.

Later, he went to Coimbatore where police said he and Fathima, also a transperson, were in a relationship. Fathima committed suicide in a fallout between them but did not accuse Hussain in her dying declaration, police said. Hussain was remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.
