Man dies after cow rams bike; manja thread injures woman

Chennai: A 49-year-old man was killed after a cow rammed his two-wheeler near the Mathur toll plaza on Thursday evening. His wife, who was riding pillion, sustained minor injuries. Police have launched a probe and are working to find the owner of the animal.Arungiri, 49, and Devi, 40, were on their way to Madhavaram to visit a relative in a hospital. As they were passing by the Mathur toll gate, a stray cow suddenly darted across the road and collided with their two-wheeler. Arungiri lost balance and fell, suffering severe head injuries. Passersby alerted emergency services. He was rushed to Govt Stanley Medical College and Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on the way, police said.Police have registered a case and investigation is underway. Officials from the Manali zone of the city corporation were informed about the incident, following which teams were deployed on the stretch to round up stray cattle.This is the latest in a series of fatal incidents linked to stray cattle on roads in and around Chennai. In Dec 2025, S Rajkumar, 52, an assistant engineer with TNEB, and Venkatesan, 58, were killed near Guduvanchery after a speeding van hit two cows, lost control and crashed into multiple vehicles. Two women and a pedestrian were grievously injured in that incident, while the cattle also died.In another case reported in Aug last year, a 22-year-old law student, Sonu of Thiruninravur, was killed and his friend Praveen, 23, was injured after their motorcycle skidded on the Vandalur-Minjur Outer Ring Road when a cow crossed their path. Residents urged authorities to take stricter measures to clear stray cattle from arterial roads.
