CHENNAI: A 32-year-old plantain leaf vendor was arrested by the Adambakkam police on Thursday for chasing and causing his father's death after the latter refused to give him a portion of their family property. Police identified the accused as Ganeshan. His father, Manohar, 68, was a real estate agent. Police said Ganehsan had pledged his wife's gold to start a business. As his wife started seeking the jewellery back, Ganeshan demanded 2 lakh from his father on Thursday. Police said Manohar refused to heed to Ganeshan's demands and he turned violent. He punched Manohar repeatedly. Manohar ran out of the house declaring that he was going to the Adambakkam police station to lodge a complaint. Ganeshan assaulted his father again and soon the later swooned. Police rushed to the spot and took Manohar to the Chrompet government hospital. Police said Manohar was a heart patient and the shower of punches caused a heart attack, causing death. Police registered a case under section 304 of the IPC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Ganeshan was remanded in judicial custody. Manohar was a resident of E B Colony in Ramakrishna Nagar while his son Ganeshan resided in the same neighbourhood. Police said Ganeshan ran a roadside shop. She used to go to his shop and shout at Ganeshan seeking her gold back, police said. On the day when Ganeshan attacked his father, he was drunk, officers said.
