CHENNAI: A team of office-bearers of the Tamil Nadu State Aquatic Association took charge on Sunday with a clarion call for making

swimming

classes compulsory in schools in the state.

The new team was elected for a three-year tenure at the association’s annual general body meeting on Sunday.

Dr Sadayavel Kailasam is the new president of the association. There are 10 vice-presidents – C Sridhar, RN Jayaprakash, K Kantharaj, R Mohan, J Jaya Suriyan, KK Mukundan, M Muniyandi, TS Kumarasamy, CP Stree Kumar and Stalin Arockiyaraj.

The new team resolved to conduct the Asian Age Group championship in Tamil Nadu in consultation with their parent body -- the Swimming Federation of India. It said steps would be taken to modernise the infrastructure facilities in existing swimming pools across Tamil Nadu.

The team also resolved that it would recommend to the government to make swimming classes compulsory in all schools which have swimming pools on their campuses.

T Chandrasekaran was elected secretary and he will be assisted by two joint secretaries – T Vaitheeswaran and KS Elangovan.
