Madras Week 2019 to include quizzes, walks and exhibitions
Chennai: Actor Mohan Raman and historian V Sriram on Monday announced the line-up of events for the latest edition of Madras Week, scheduled between August 18 to 25 in the city, with several events continuing till the end of the month, as the city celebrates its 380th year on August 22.
The celebrations will begin on August 15 with ‘Panorama of Indian Lighthouses’ by engineer and maritime historian D Hemachandra Rao at Madras Heritage Museum. From August 17 onwards, a series of walks, contests, talks, exhibitions and quizzes will mark what has come to become the ‘Madras Month’ of August.
“What began as a celebration of Madras Day, has over the years, grown into a month-long festival with enthusiasts organising events even before the end of July. This is the beauty of the festival; we just announce the dates and facilitate anyone who wants to conduct events. What we share is a common love for the city,” says Mohan Raman, one of the coordinators.
Among the events will be an audio tour of George Town by the Urban Design Collective on August 17; a talk on the Tamil stand-up by Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, theatre and film actor, Annamalai L of Tanglish Comedy, Jagan Krishnan and Guru Nicketan on August 19 at Amethyst; a quiz on Madras, its sporting and film history by Partab Ramchand on August 21; and a talk on ‘Women, Sports and Madras’ by veteran golf player Jayshree Bhagath on August 24.
