CHENNAI: The Madras high court has quashed a petition challenging the
victory
of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J
Jayalalithaa from
R K Nagar
constituency in May 2016 assembly
election
.
In August 1016, an independent candidate moved the Madras high court questioning the validity of the AIADMK leader’s poll win.
The petitioner, G Pravina of R K Nagar, alleged that the returning officer of the constituency had not given permission for her to campaign in the constituency. Pravina said she had been denied permission to use vehicles for campaigning.
The petitioner said her campaign vehicles had been detained at gunpoint by police, and the pot symbol allotted to her was not as per the specification of the election commission.
On Wednesday, highlighting that the petition was infructuous because of the former CM’s death, Justice M Duraiswamy said charges against her stood abated.
