Lok Sabha elections 2024: Congress signs poll pact with DMK, loses Trichy to MDMK

CHENNAI: Congress which successfully contested in Trichy constituency in 2019 has lost the constituency to its alliance partner MDMK. However, the party will contest in Tirunelveli, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai instead of Theni, Arani and Trichy.

Congress was allotted nine constituencies in Tamil Nadu and the lone seat of Puducherry in the DMK alliance. Both DMK and Congress signed the agreement for the nine constituencies in which Congress is set to contest. Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Sivaganga, Tirunelveli, Krishnagiri, Karur, Virudhunagar and Kanyakumari are the nine constituencies allotted for the Congress in TN.

Among the nine constituencies, four are in southern districts.

In 2019, Congress contested in nine constituencies and lost in one constituency, Theni, to AIADMK. This time, Congress has been allotted Tirunelveli constituency to avert the defeat in Theni constituency.

Similarly, as MDMK demanded Trichy constituency, Congress was allotted Mayiladuthurai constituency.

As far as Arani constituency is concerned, Congress had contested twice in the constituency and DMK once, in 2014. Due to anti-incumbency in the constituency against the incumbent MP M K Vishnu Prasad, Congress was allotted Cuddalore constituency.

After the allocation of the constituency, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai said in a statement that the process of obtaining the application for contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and for Vilavancode bypoll commenced on Monday. He said Congress functionaries who are interested to contest in the Lok Sabha elections can submit their applications at the Congress headquarters in Chennai.

Meanwhile, MDMK founder Vaiko, while speaking to reporters at the DMK headquarters after striking the deal, said that the candidate for Trichy would be announced in the evening.
