Life sentence for man who hurled bombs at police
Chennai: History-sheeter Murugan alias Nondi Murugan, has been sentenced to a life term and fined 11,000 for hurling bombs at a police party that came to apprehend him in Chennai in June 2001.A special court at Poonamallee passed the verdict on Friday after which Murugan was sent to Puzhal prison. Seven people, including Murugan, were arrested for the attack, in which a sub-inspector of police, a head constable, and a bystander were injured.The matter relates to a dispute between the complainant in the case, Prem Chand, and a convicted accused, Tharam Chand, over a property in Mandaveli market. Tharam Chand sent hirelings to Prem Chand's house to threaten him. Prem Chand called the police and a sub-inspector and a head constable arrived at his home. That's when the thugs threw country-made bombs inside Prem Chand's house. The cops and another man were injured when the bombs exploded.The Mylapore police registered a case of attempted murder, use of explosives, and preventing govt servants from executing their work. The police arrested Jagan alias Jagadeesan, Sundar, Murugan alias Nondi Murugan, Chinna Boobalan alias Anbu, Hussain, Tharam Chand, and Appu alias Krishnasamy.Appu alias Krishnasamy, who was earlier arrested for the murder of Varadharaja Perumal temple staff Sankararaman, died in an Andhra Pradesh jail where he was detained for smuggling red sanders.Another of the accused, Hussain, too died of ailments. Three other accused Sundar, Chinna Boobalan, and Tharam Chand were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in 2016. One of the accused, Jagan alias Jagadeesan, has jumped bail.
