CHENNAI: A day after an eight-member gang attacked a lawyer and her son with machetes, while the other side retaliated with country bombs on Blackers Road near
Anna Salai
, police arrested the lawyer-son duo and two others under the Explosives Act.
Police said 50-year-old Malarvizhi, who is a lawyer, was returning in an autorickshaw after appearing in a case at the
Egmore
court. Her son Azhaguraja, 31, also a lawyer, and two others — Vijayakumar, 30, and Manikandan, 19 were with her.
Police suspect Malarvizhi’s attackers to be accomplices of history-sheeter Shivakumar, whose gang killed Sekar’s cousin in 2003. Sekar was an accused in the murder of Shivakumar’s brother in 2001. In retaliation, Sekar was killed the same year.
Around 1.30pm on Thursday, when the autorickshaw was in front of Casino theatre, eight men on four bikes intercepted the vehicle and started attacking Malarvizhi, who was injured in the head and shoulder. Azhaguraja was also injured, but he took on the gang, hurling a country bomb, which he had kept in his bag.
Malarvizhi and her son were rushed to Government
Stanley Medical College
and Hospital. Chintadripet police on Friday booked them under the Explosives Act for possession of country-made bombs. The four have been remanded in judicial custody. Police sources said Azhaguraja got the bombs from
Madurai
. Police are yet to establish the motive behind the attack.
