doweshowbellyad=0; \VISHAL: A star on the rise?CHENNAI: Get set for Kollywood's first super hero - Vishal. Tamil cinema has always had larger-than-life heroes, but this time they're going to be mind-blowing. The search is on to sign up a popular Hollywood heroine, as well as a villain. To be made at a staggering cost, the minimum budget is Rs 50 crore and likely to climb higher, the yet untitled movie will be shot largely in New York.
Craig Mumma is the visual effects and location supervisor, who has worked on sequels to The Mummy, the Stuart Little series, and on Bollywood blockbusters Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish. His retainer fee alone for the Tamil film comes to a little over Rs 1 crore. Mumma will be assisted by a team of technicians hand picked from New York, Bangkok and Hollywood, sources said. The film marks the recent Kollywood trend of making big budget films. Sivaji starring Rajnikant, was reportedly made at a cost of Rs 60 crore, and the Kamal Hassan starrer Dasavatharam has cost even more. The films have been made by Chennai production houses AVM and Oscar Films respectively. Vishal's super hero film is again a local affair, with G K Films, owned by Vishal's brother Vikram Krishna, as the producers. Vishal who started his film career as an assistant director before turning hero with Chellame in 2004 followed it up with the mega hit Sanda Kozhi in 2005, quickly making it onto the list of Kollywood's top ten heroes. From carrying 'aruvals' and toting guns it is a big jump for the Kollywood action hero. He will also be directing the mega venture. The story, written by Vishal,is reportedly aimed at the global audience. Will Tamil cinema travel further than its traditional overseas bastion of Malaysia, Singapore, the Gulf, USA and UK, all of which boast a huge NRI population? We'll know soon enough. bhama.devi@timesgroup .com
