Kanimozhi refutes Amit Shah's allegations on Sri Lankan refugee issue

CHENNAI: DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi on Friday refuted the charges of Union home minister Amit Shah, saying she had raised the issue of Sri Lankan refugees in Parliament during the previous UPA govt.

Kanimozhi was responding to Amit Shah's remarks, who during his reply to the discussion on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, said, "DMK MPs have never raised the issue of Tamil refugees."

Taking to X, Kanimozhi said, "Home minister @AmitShah's claim that the DMK has not raised the issue of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees with the Union govt is incorrect. I raised the issue of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the Rajya Sabha as early as December 2009, demanding legal clarity and citizenship. Parliamentary records from 2009, 2010, and 2012 stand as proof."

Saying that the DMK had spoken about Lankan refugees for a long time, Kanimozhi said, "This is not a new concern. We have consistently spoken up without seeking credit and purely out of commitment to our people."

The DMK MP said that she and her fellow MPs were ready to resolve the issue. "If seeking a personal meeting will resolve the problems of the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, DMK members of parliament will not hesitate to do so," Kanimozhi said.
