CHENNAI: Acting Chief Justice of Madras high court Justice R Mahadevan has been elevated as a judge of Supreme Court by the collegium. In his place, Justice K R Shriram of Bombay high court has been appointed the new Chief Justice of Madras high court.
In a notification on Thursday, Supreme Court said: "Being conversant with the work of Justice Mahadevan on the judicial side and as a senior judge of the HC, the collegium is of the view that he is eminently suitable for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court,."
Noting that Justice Mahadevan ranks third in the order of seniority, behind the incumbent Chief Justice of Calcutta high court justice T S Sivagnanam and Meghalaya Chief Justice S Vaidyanathan, the collegium said: "At this stage, the collegium has given precedence to the candidature of Justice Mahadevan in order to give representation to the backward community, it added. His appointment will bring diversity to the Bench."
The newly appointed Chief Justice of Madras high court, Justice K R Shriram was born in Mumbai and completed his B Com in financial accountancy and management and LLB from Mumbai University, following which he pursued LLM (Maritime Law) from King's College, London.
He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar council of Maharashtra and Goa on July 3, 1986 and joined the Chambers of senior advocate S Venkiteswaran.
Since 1997 he had his own practice and dealt in commercial matters with specialisation in shipping and international trade law; writ matters arising out of Ports Acts, Customs Act, Motor Vehicles Act, Marine Insurance (including re-insurance and P&I); Company Law matters etc.
Justice Shriram was appointed additional judge of Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013. He was confirmed as permanent judge of the high court on March 2, 2016.
