Joblessness frustrating youth, driving them to violence: Ramchandra Guha

CHENNAI: Noted historian Ramchandra Guha on Friday said a lot of violence in India today is by those in the age group of 18-30 years who are taking out their frustration due to the lack of jobs and jobless growth in economy. He was delivering an endowment lecture at Madras Christian College.

Guha said there is a huge human resource of youth and but unfortunately there was lack of job creation.

He said while in China the economic development had gone hand in hand with job creation, the nature of India’s development had not resulted in enough job creation. This, he said, could be reason for youngsters to be driven to frustration.

Guha also shared his opinions on political democracy, securalism and cultural freedom in the light of India's journey since independence.

“There is a belief that unless everyone speaks the same language in India, they would not have faith in equality,” Guha said during his lecture.

Guha was delivering the lecture on ‘India at 70: A Historian’s Report Card on the occasion of the birth centenary of Padmashree Dr Chandran Devanesen, the first Indian principal of the college.

The reprinted copy of ‘The Making of Mahatma’, a book written by Dr Devanesen fifty years ago was released by

West Bengal

governor. A documentary on the life and works of was also screened on the occasion. A souvenir on the life of Dr Devanesen was released by KM

and board of directors.

A book brought out by the Centre for Peace Studies of the College was also released during the event. C Sundaraj, Bursar of the College and RW
