Chennai: The Sastri Nagar police station in Chennai has registered an FIR under Section 63(a) of the Copyright Act based on a complaint against film director, T J Gnanavel and the production house, 2D entertainment, on allegations of story theft for the movie, Jai Bhim starring actor Suriya.
Police said V Kulanjiyappan, on whom a character was depicted, had filed a complaint the filmmaker and the production house did not pay the royalty as promised, after listening to the stories of police excess at Kammapuram police station in 1993. Kulanjiyappan alleged, “The makers promised to pay each of us ₹50 lakh as royalty for our stories and made tall claims about share in the profits.” Apart from not keeping the promises, the makers also depicted them and their community in bad light, the complainant said.
