Chennai: Opener N Jagadeesan smashed his fourth back-to-back century en route Tamil Nadu’s 151-run win against Haryana in Vijay Hazare Trophy on Saturday to equal the List A record for most consecutive centuries. The right-hander became only the fourth player in the world to achieve the feat. Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, former South Africa batter Alviro Petersen and Karnataka left-hander Devdutt Padikkal are the only other players to have hit four tons on the trot in List-A cricket.
Released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of this year’s IPL auction, Jagadeesan has had a dream start in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. With scores of 5, 114*, 107, 168 and 128, he has amassed 522 runs in five matches and is the highest run-getter of the tournament so far. The wicketkeeper has joined forces with opening partner B Sai Sudharsan to provide four century-plus starts in a row to TN, which have taken the side to top of the table in Group C.
“I have been focusing on the process and my preparations before every match. It feels good to equal the record,” Jagadeesan told TOI after his knock on Saturday. Hailing Jagadeesan’s record-equalling feat as a “fantastic achievement”, TN coach Venkataramana said, “The numbers speak for themselves. To keep wickets and run hundreds of runs between the wickets for back-to-back matches is not easy.”
With the form he is currently in, Jagadeesan could rewrite history books in the match against Arunachal Pradesh on Monday.
Brief scores: Tamil Nadu 284-7 in 50 overs (N Jagadeesan 128, Sai Sudharsan 67; Mohit Sharma 2-43). Haryana 133 in 28.3 overs (Rahul Tewatia 34; B Aparajith 3-24). Tamil Nadu won by 151 runs.
