The deceased man was identified as Selvakumar, 30, attached to the law-and-order wing of the Sembium police station. He stayed at his elder brother Perumal’s house on Second Sector in KK Nagar.

Following a quarrel with his brother, an inebriated Selvakumar locked up his brother Perumal, who works as an assistant engineer at the TNEB office in KK Nagar, and sister-in-law Dhanalakshmi, a Mahila Court Judge in Chengalpet, inside one of the rooms before ransacking the belongings and home appliances.

Perumal informed some of his friends and relatives and alerted them to convince and calm down his brother. As they gathered at the front door and started banging on it, a few others peeped through the window and negotiated with him.

He also found some of his brother’s friends standing near the rear entrance. He overheard some of them informing the Chennai city control room.

Panicked over it, Selvakumar went to the second floor and tried to scale the compound wall, which was two feet away from the balcony. Missing his calculation, Selvakumar fell right above the protruding iron rods fixed to the compound wall.

After he was trapped on the iron rod, the police team from the KK Nagar police station rushed to the spot. They cut the iron rod and took him to the ESI hospital in KK Nagar, where the doctors examined and declared him brought dead.

Police said the deceased Selvakumar is survived by his brother Perumal, three other siblings, and parents. Two of his brothers are farmers in a village near Villupuram. As Selvakumar was the youngest, he stayed at his brother’s house and was employed at the Sembium police station.

Selvakumar's body will be handed over to his family after performing an autopsy on Saturday.
