HR & CE oppose Kanchi temple trustee’s plea
Chennai: Opposing the plea moved by thathachariars (hereditary trustees) of Kancheepuram Varadaraja Perumal Temple alleging that their right to perform rituals to Athi Varadar Perumal when he was brought out of an underground tank in the temple was been denied by the temple authorities, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department has informed the Madras high court that they were already permitted to perform their rights.
“The idol of Athi Varadhar, which has been immersed in the Anathasaras Kulam for 40 years was taken out in the early hours of June 28 in the presence of the thathachariars, more specifically the elder brother of the petitioner. The Thathachariar's were reciting manthrapushpam, vedaparayanam and swasthivqjana manthiram when the idol was taken out,” N Thiagarajan, executive trustee of the temple, said.
On June 29, the idol was placed in the Vasantha Mandapam and was cleaned with water. On June 30 around 11am in the presence of Thathacharyar all other mandatory poojas and rituals were performed, he added.
On the same day, after performing lagu protchanam the archagas performed thiruvaradhanam while the thathachariars recited the veda manthiram and manthira pushpam, the officer pointed out.
He further submitted that all the rituals are followed scrupulously by the archagas and all poojas are duly performed every day and the prasadams are first given to the thathachariyars and distributed to others only after that.
Noting that the same practice will be duly followed for all the 48 days and the thathachariars will be duly honoured, the officer wanted the court to dismiss the plea.
