CHENNAI: Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday made a slew of announcements to boost the city's infrastructure in the face of increasing vehicular population and congested traffic.This included a flyover on Mount-Poonamallee High Road at a cost of `214 crore.

The public works department will also restore Velachery lake in south Chennai at a cost of `25 crore, as part of the government's lake restoration efforts.

“The flyover's alignment will take it past MIOT Hospitals, Ramapuram, L&T and DLF to Mugalivakkam,“ Palaniswami said.

He allocated `1crore to prepare a detailed project report. The highways department also plans to construct

flyovers

at vital junctions like Kunrathur, Madipak kam, Madambakkam and Korattur, besides a high level bridge between Vadapalani and Ashok Pillar at a cost of ` 380 crore, after completion of detailed study reports to ease traffic. A 2-km long Tambaram Eastern Bypass will be built in the south to connect Maraimalai Adigal bridge and Irumbuliyur Road in Rajakilpakkam and Perungalathur.

Currently , the highways department is building flyovers at Porur, Pallavaram, Velachery , Kaliamman Koil Road off Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Medavakkam, Kilkattalai and Kolathur Rettai Eri at a cost of `581crore.

“Phase II of Outer Ring Road, a six-lane 30.5km road from Nemilicheri on NH-205 to Minjur on the TiruvottiyurPonneri-Panchetty Road via Padiyanallur on NH-5, will be completed at a cost of `1,075 crore by this year,“ the CM said.

Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa laid the foundation stone for Phase II in August 2014. The government also announced that it will widen the OragadamWalajabad Road to a six-lane expressway at a cost of `185 crore.
