Rakesh Varshan was working in a private company in the city, and was working from home for the past two years. He used to drink and smoke ganja frequently, and pick up fights with his mother. Police said Rakesh would often assault his mother Sripriya whenever she advised him to refrain from smoking ganja.

On Friday, Rakesh's father and sister had gone to work, while Rakesh was working from home. In the afternoon, an argument broke out between the mother and son. Rakesh, who was under the influence of ganja, attacked Sripriya. He hit her head against a wall repeatedly, police said. Sripriya collapsed and became unconscious.

Rakesh called 108 service and informed them that his mother had fallen unconscious. The 108 staff found Rakesh lying next to his mother with knife injuries on his hands. Both Sripriya and Rakesh were taken to a government hospital. Rakesh told police he inflicted knife injuries after seeing his mother unconscious. Sripriya was declared dead. A postmortem revealed that she suffered repeated blows on her head. During questioning, Rakesh confessed to killing his mother.
