Heavy rain lashes Chennai

South Chennai received more rainfall than the northern parts of the city. The automatic rain gauge in Anna University recorded 90mm by 8.30am on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: Heavy rain that began on Tuesday morning continued to lash the city till Wednesday morning.
Nungambakkam received 90mm of rain while Meenambakkam received 80mm of rainfall in the 12-hour period ending at 8.30am on Wednesday, according to the regional meteorological centre.
Officials at the RMC said they were still assessing the situation. “It is a weak low pressure and we had already predicted that north Tamil Nadu will receive heavy rain for the next three days,” said YEA Raj, deputy director general for India Meteorological Department (IMD).

South Chennai received more rainfall than the northern parts of the city. The automatic rain gauge in Anna University recorded 90mm by 8.30am on Wednesday. “However, Ennore received only 15mm. Rain in the city was most intense in the south and west,” said Raj.
By Tuesday, Tamil Nadu received 14% excess rainfall during this southwest monsoon and Chennai received 24% excess rain. Between June 1 and September 10, Chennai had received 436mm of rain while Tamil Nadu on the whole received 265mm.
Niligiris had clocked in the highest rainfall in the period with 750mm — a 15% excess. On the other extreme, Toothukudi received only 11mm of rain — a 76% deficit.
